Help my Blackberry is wet - my personal experience

Help, my blackberry is wet. Did your blackberry fall in a lake or river? Worse yet, the toilet? (yuck), or maybe you were caught in a downpour with your blackberry. The result is pretty much always the same, your blackberry is wet and like most electrical devices, this can destroy it and mean you'll be facing an insurance claim, or worse, the purchase of a new device.

My own unfortunate story isn't unfortunate at all and hopefully with a little help, your blackberry device will be back to normal soon (hopefully).

Like most BlackBerry owners, I am rarely found without being litterally "attached at the hip" with my device. I own and operate a small web development firm and use my BlackBerry only for urgent emails from my clients and developers and I also run IM+ (MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, Google) to keep in constant contact. I am also a part time sport fishing guide during the season, and of all the people who should have insurance on their device, I should have!

On my final guided fishing trip of the season I was shoving the boat away from shore when I realized that I would have to abort and jump back to shore before losing my balance and falling into the lake. It was at this time when I heard a small splash and suddenly felt like I was missing something, as well as feeling slightly lighter ;). I quickly realized that my precious BlackBerry was now submerged in about ten inches of water. Though still operational for the moment, I immediately grabed it out of the water. Within seconds it began to vibrate (my default ring setting) though no call was coming in. S#%!, I figured it was the end and all I could see were dollar signs in my future.

As quickly as I could I slid off the backplate and removed the battery. For the next eight hours or so I was greatly disturbed and in a fine mood, with only myself to blame of course. Being the extremely impatient guy that I am, I decided to put in the battery and give it a try just eight hours after it was completely submerged (and without searching the web for help). Things looked promising as it booted up fine, however my rolling the scroll wheel and pressing any buttons had no effect. Again I removed the battery and waited. After about another 3 hours I decided to try again and with even more success. I was able to make a call eventhough some buttons were still not responding.

Finally when I returned home, I decided to place the device (backplate and battery removed) on top of the TV and DVR where there was constant heat for drying. I left it there overnight and as luck would have it, the next day it worked just like nothing had ever happened, and it was cleaner to boot!
