Some people believe that a cell phone directory is needed---there are some websites over the Internet that will provide you with a look up for cell phone numbers for a fee usually one time. An example of a company that has a cell phone directory that you can browse for around $15 per search is Intelius. The said company sells those cell phone numbers and other information pertaining to the searched cell phone numbers. Intelius also sells background checks online of course with a fee.
The information that Intelius publishes in its cell phone directory have come from the marketing companies' databases as well as public records, actually sources that some people may have opted in to. Names, addresses and cell phone numbers are gathered by Intelius to add to their cell phone directory.
A joint cell phone directory planned by major wireless phone providers was supposed to be created but then again due to some privacy issues, government agencies and some consumer groups didn't agree and so a law was passed that required to get the permission of the subscribers first before listing any of their cell phone numbers.
A cell phone directory service may have its advantages but a great disadvantage would be when telemarketers are able to purchase cell phone numbers and keep on bugging them with promotional offers and sales of products and services. This would of course be like an assault on your privacy. The only people who should have access to your cell phone numbers would be people you gave your number to but now with the rise of cell phone directories, with just a couple of dollars, anyone can get a hold of your information and call you whether you like it or not. That is why you may choose to include your cell phone number in the Do not Call Registry for you not to be bugged by strangers calling your mobile phone.
Aside from selling cell phone numbers found in the cell phone directory of Intelius, the people who search for cell phone numbers will also find information about the owner's birth date, credit history, driving records and even criminal records which would be unsafe especially in this world of identity fraud.
A very important advice that you should take would be to think twice in signing up or opting in with marketing or advertising companies as they would probably sell it to companies like Intelius. True, a cell phone directory may be beneficial but when used in the wrong way, it would just put the cell phone owners into dangerous situations.
